Ochsner Health System

Improving cancer care through research

Ochsner Health System is Louisiana’s largest non-profit, academic health care system. Driven by a mission to Serve, Heal, Lead, Educate and Innovate to Prevent and Cure Cancer, Ochsner has been dedicated to cancer research and new cancer treatment development, bringing innovations to the fight against cancer. Ochsner is the only Louisiana hospital recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a “Best Hospital” across three specialty categories and cares for patients from all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide each year. Ochsner employs nearly 25,000 employees and over 4,500 employed and affiliated physicians in over 90 medical specialties and subspecialties, with a research program that currently conducts more than 700 clinical research studies.

Ochsner Cancer Institute is the oldest National Cancer Institute funded program in Louisiana, with continuous funding since 1983. The primary goal is to improve care for cancer patients in the Gulf South and to help relieve the burden of cancer for our patients. Adult and pediatric cancer patients benefit from Ochsner’s collaborative approach to cancer care delivered by a highly skilled team of physicians, oncology nurses, social workers, researchers and other cancer professionals. Incorporating the latest surgical and radiation techniques, as well as novel therapies, clinical research and comprehensive support, patients receive a personalized approach to their cancer.

The Ochsner Cancer Institute cancer research network consists of investigators across Louisiana and southern Mississippi. More than 160 cancer clinical trials are offered today at Ochsner, including NCI-sponsored studies. The Ochsner Precision Cancer Therapies Program also offers Phase 1 cancer clinical trials, which involve first use of anti-cancer treatments in cancer patients.

The Ochsner Cancer Institute continues to grow rapidly and, over the last few years, has experienced a 15 percent increase in patient enrollment into therapeutic clinical trials. Ochsner is thrilled and honored to be a participating member of the Gulf South Clinical Trials Network to develop new programs for cancer prevention and treatment and reduce the burden of cancer in the region.
